Description
For your consideration is a United Firemen's Insurance Company of Philadelphia Cast Iron Sign. This insurance company was incorporated in 1860 by a group of 28 fire and hose companies.
When they issued their first fire mark in 1862, they even decided to use a steam engine on it.
This oval sign is made of cast iron and measures approximately 11" x 9 1/4" & weighs well over 5 pounds.
On the back are the numbers 22-8, along with the letter VM (with the Betty Lamp image in the middle) - this is the mark of the
well known Virginia Metalcrafters.
This is a rarer 3-D green steam engine and raised gold lettering - in very good condition.
These signs were placed on the exterior of a house and were intended to discourage malicious arson by showing that the owner would
not greatly suffer if the building was destroyed.
Also, the sign stood as a guarantee to fire brigades the insurance company, which insured the building in question would reward handsomely
the brigade extinguishing a blaze on the premises.
