    Description

    ITEM DESCRIPTION:
    Every so often I find something unique that defies category. And here we are. Approx. 8 x 7", 20 page hand made booklet, all hand lettered and drawn, a get well card. Clear plastic cover. Ribbon binding.
    Titled "To My Ailing Friend in the Horsepittle", with what one presumes is her friend depicted in hospital bed;
    next we have a drawing of a person in hospital bed with friend and writing about a "belly scratch";
    next pages go on to drawing of a queen, and about the holder of "the most cut-up and cut out" crown gossiping;
    next a drawing of 3 girls gossiping and how the recipient of card will talk about injury;
    next we have a drawing of a black man and a jury "Jim Crow's Last Stand" caption, man is sitting at a courtroom box labeled "McLaurin", saying thus:
    "some body's gotta headline nooz back there / Gotta gossip 'bout somethin' 'cept the Oakie Fair / Ain't ben nuthin' doin since the McLaurin Truce / (That fer shure he'd be a cooked goose)" (sic)
    which clearly means McLaurin v. Oklahoma State Regents, 339 U.S. 637 (1950), which was before the famous Brown v. Board of Education case, George W. McLaurin being a black man that applied to to be admitted to graduate education at the University of Oklahoma in 1948, was denied, went to court, and was placed in a special room, etc., - segregated - and appealed to the Supreme Court, getting the law struck down in 1950.  Anyway, this goes on to say:
    "But I guess it was bad enough to look at his pan / In the dead open, rather than, keep him in that stuffy lil cage/ looking like Sir Baboon on the last page of the final edition of comic bookology (bet fer shure he got a "Z" in loolcology)" (sic)
    Next we have 2 blank pages, one with grass like design at bottom
    Next we have a drawing of "Recovery Hill", with gold foil tree, sewn on stars, etc. talks about same topic;
    Next, a black newspaer person proclaiming "wuxtray!" headline of Gladys Thomas arriving in town, talk about how they are best friends, home from hospital, etc;
    next, she'll pray - drawing oif thus and Bible verse - and signed "Alma Hunter Taylor '54"
    Finally, we have the back cover, "Original Alma Hunter Taylor 4872 W 21st St L.A. 16    '54" which I believe to be an old Oklahoma City address, not a reference to Los Angeles.
    Really not sure what this is worth, how to described it, etc. - this was obtained from an unknown estate. Always look forward to input from people about items like this!
